Watching a Kurdish city almost disappear from its "Kurdishness" as hundreds of thousands flee to Turkey is as painful as watching the millions of other Syrians thrown out into the cold in their own country and in neighboring states. Kobani under siege by ISIS rekindles distant and recent memories of Arab-Kurdish relationship, a history marked by chauvinistic Arab condescension toward the Kurds. Kobani which is the Kurdish name of what the Syrians call Ayin Al Arab (Eye of the Arab) revived the unsettling relationship between Arabs and Kurds and elicited recent commentaries by Arab progressives. Lebanese academic and activist Fawaz Traboulsi: "The Eye of the Arabs is on Kobani, but not the eye of all Arabs, because for some Arabs, to prove their 'Arabism' they have to assert their hatred of the Kurds."
Commenting on Syrian-Kurdish relationship, Syrian poet Hala Muhammad wrote: "The Syrian regime had "Arabized" the names of the Syrian Kurdish villages, along with every non-Arabic name, and refused to grant the Kurdish citizens of these villages, and for that matter all other nationalities, Syrian citizenship." As for the language, "The Arabic language is the language of equal citizenship, the language of beauty, imagination and meanings, a language that is free from narrow chauvinistic nationalism." She concludes, Azadi (which means freedom in the Kurdish language).
