Doris Bittar’s ‘Cryptographic’: Finding Identity and Unity Through Art
Doris Bittar exhibited a new collection at the Al Quds Gallery in Washington, D.C. An artist and educator, Bittar utilizes art to guide her through the questions of life. In “Cryptographic,” the artist expresses the concept of identity and unity through works created by things she has collected over time, each taken from isolation and recombined to paint an entirely new image. Bittar also explores the impact of art-historical ideas, such as modernism, on her life and identity as a Middle Eastern woman. Using an assembly of bright and bold elements, she introduces a collection of works that bring forth critical thoughts on the idea of self and its relation to place and time. Bobby Gulshan reviews the ‘Cryptographic’ Exhibition for the forthcoming issue of Al Jadid Magazine, Vol. 20, No. 70, 2016.
